The Gift of your own presence…

The season of giving is upon us.  Mother Teresa once said, “It is not how much we give, but how much LOVE we put into giving.”  We can easily make mindless purchases and give without much thought and care – gadgets, trinkets, jewels, sweaters, books, or even our time, energy, and donations.  What would the energy be like in your home and the communities around if everyone gave from a place of deep love this holiday season?  Everyone feeling grateful and full from the inside watching their gift of love be received by another.  How can we move from mindless giving to giving from a place of love?

One way to do this is to remember, even in the spirit of giving to others, the importance of self love and self care.  In order to give authentically from a place of love, we must first and foremost give and love up on ourselves.  As we get pulled into the fast pace of the next few weeks, take the time to stay on course with your own self love and self care practices (Don’t have self care practices? Now is a great time to start prioritizing some space for yourself).  Spend some time with your eyes closed and find a sense of fullness inside.  Roll out your mat and feel your body receiving breath, movement, and space.  Take a bath, read a book, oil your body, cozy up by a fire and allow yourself to be pulled into the pattern of flames.  Nourish your body with warming foods.  Give yourself plenty of time to rest and relax.  When we slow down, soften, and allow tension, stress, and the business of life to unravel, we make space and room to more authentically settle into our bodies, minds, and hearts.  When we are quiet enough to listen, we can truly hear the motives and desires of our own hearts.

The Buddha once said,

“Before giving, the mind of the giver is happy;

While giving, the mind of the giver is peaceful;

And having given, the mind of the giver is uplifted.”

Before giving this holiday season, carve out some special time to give to yourself, ensuring that you, as the “giver”, are in a space that is “happy” and making choices from a place of love.  There are many offerings at Lila this month to help support you in your practice.  Join us for our weekly classes or the handful of special offerings allowing for you to presence yourself.

There are so many ways to give, this holiday season may we all remember to give from a place of deep love.

“The heart that gives, gathers.” – Tao Te Ching
